The teaching git MCP: status, diff, log, branch, and also add / commit / checkout / reset. Official README still calls it early development and pins MCP Python SDK 1.x. Most coding agents already have git; this is extra write surface, not a missing capability.

Strengths

  • Official reference from the MCP steering group, uvx one-liner.
  • Structured git_status / git_diff / git_log without scraping terminal output.
  • Docker image mcp/git with a bind mount if you do not want uvx.

Known limitations

  • Requires MCP Python SDK 1.x (`mcp>=1.29.0,<2`); SDK 2 port is unfinished.
  • git_commit, git_add, git_reset, git_checkout are write tools on the repo you pass.
  • README: currently in early development; tools can change.

Use it when

  • A first MCP install to prove the client can talk to a local repo.
  • Agents that are not already sitting inside the git repo they need to read.

Skip it when

  • The agent already has git (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Aider).
  • You cannot accept git_commit / git_checkout from an MCP tool.
  • You are on MCP Python SDK 2.x; this server still requires 1.x.

Buy-check

  • ·Price — free, MIT reference; uvx mcp-server-git or pip mcp-server-git as of 2026-08-26. Open the pricing page, not a screenshot.
  • ·Free tier — Free tier exists — burn it first.
  • ·Cancel fallout — What happens to your data/projects on cancel — check the ToS, not the FAQ.
  • ·Seat math — Per-seat pricing multiplies quietly. Count seats before the annual plan.
  • ·Who skips it — Also skipped when: The agent already has git (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Aider).; You cannot accept git_commit / git_checkout from an MCP tool..
