The web MCP that actually returns markdown: hosted at mcp.firecrawl.dev, keyless scrape/search/parse for a first try, then a Firecrawl key or OAuth for crawl/map/agent. Self-host and npx firecrawl-mcp exist. Credits are the Firecrawl plan, not a second bill.

Strengths

  • Hosted Streamable HTTP with a keyless free slice (scrape, search, parse).
  • Same Firecrawl credits as the API — Free is 1,000 credits/month, no extra MCP SKU.
  • Local npx firecrawl-mcp and self-host when the URL should not leave your cloud.

Known limitations

  • Keyless hosted tools are scrape, search, and parse only, and rate-limited.
  • Crawl, map, interact, and agent still need a Firecrawl API key or OAuth.
  • Credits do not roll over on self-serve plans (Firecrawl pricing, 2026-08-26).

Use it when

  • Coding agents that need a live page as markdown, not a browser MCP.
  • Keyless first try of scrape/search/parse before creating a Firecrawl key.

Skip it when

  • Playwright or Chrome DevTools MCP already covers the page you would scrape.
  • Crawl, map, or agent tools — those need a Firecrawl key, not the keyless URL.
  • The target cannot leave your network; then self-host, do not use mcp.firecrawl.dev.
