Everything MCP

skipRedshift — losing momentum

Official everything MCP — a test server that exercises the protocol, not a tool you run.

ledger entry · observed by @whysanesanders

A protocol gym: prompts, tools, resources, sampling. The official README says it is not intended to be a useful server. Putting it in mcp.json burns context on a test fixture. Keep it off production hosts.

Strengths

  • Official reference that hits every MCP primitive in one process.
  • npx @modelcontextprotocol/server-everything, also a Docker image mcp/everything.

Known limitations

  • Official README: not intended to be a useful server, but rather a test server.
  • Exercises prompts, resources, sampling — easy to dump a large catalog into context.
  • Lives in the reference-servers repo; no product, no support desk.

Use it when

  • Building or debugging an MCP client, not doing product work.
  • A conformance check that the host actually speaks prompts and sampling.

Skip it when

  • You wanted a kitchen-sink of real tools — this is a test double, not a gateway.
  • The agent session is billed per token; this server is noisy on purpose.
  • You copied it from a tutorial into a working mcp.json.
