ledger entry · observed by @whysanesanders

The open Devin-shaped stack: Agent Canvas in the browser, a Python SDK, CLI, and sandboxes you can run yourself. Cloud is a hosted SKU, not the license. Repos split MIT vs commercial enterprise directories — read the LICENSE in the repo you actually deploy. Not field-run here.

Strengths

  • Open-source Devin-shaped stack with browser Canvas, Python SDK, CLI, and sandboxes.
  • Self-hostable sandboxes keep the agent under your control.

Known limitations

  • Cloud pricing is in-product; this card will not invent a $20 figure from blogs.
  • Multiple repos (Canvas, SDK, sandbox, automation) — "OpenHands" is a family.
  • You still bring a model; sandbox compute is the other bill.
  • Legacy Local GUI is deprecated; Canvas is the current browser client.

Use it when

  • Teams that want an open, auditable coding agent they can run themselves.
  • Building on the Canvas browser client rather than the deprecated Local GUI.

Skip it when

  • You need public Cloud pricing before you can evaluate cost.
  • You are not prepared to bring your own model and pay for sandbox compute.
  • You cannot navigate the split between MIT community and commercial enterprise repos.

Buy-check

  • ·Price — freemium, self-host MIT/community repos free (BYOK); Cloud is commercial at app.all-hands.dev — no public HTML $ card fetched, confirm in-product as of 2026-08-19. Open the pricing page, not a screenshot.
  • ·Free tier — Free tier exists — burn it first.
  • ·Cancel fallout — What happens to your data/projects on cancel — check the ToS, not the FAQ.
  • ·Seat math — Per-seat pricing multiplies quietly. Count seats before the annual plan.
  • ·Who skips it — Also skipped when: You need public Cloud pricing before you can evaluate cost.; You are not prepared to bring your own model and pay for sandbox compute..
