ledger entry · observed by @whysanesanders

langfuse.com is live (the 404 rumor is stale). Cloud is unit-metered (traces + observations + scores); Hobby is a real free POC; Core at $29 is the production on-ramp. Self-host OSS is full core features, Enterprise is the RBAC/audit layer plus ClickHouse commercial. Not a field install here.

Strengths

  • MIT-licensed self-host option with full core observability features.
  • Cloud Hobby is a real free POC for small teams.
  • Covers traces, prompts, evals, and unit-metered usage in one tool.

Known limitations

  • A "unit" is every trace, span, generation, and score — verbose agents get expensive.
  • Hobby hard-caps at 50k units and 2 users; no overage.
  • SSO/RBAC on Cloud is Pro+$300 Teams add-on or Enterprise, not Core.
  • Self-host Enterprise pricing is additive to ClickHouse Cloud/BYOC.

Use it when

  • Teams that need LLM observability and can self-host for compliance.
  • Small POCs that fit inside Hobby's 50k units and 2 users.

Skip it when

  • Verbose agents would blow through the per-unit meter quickly.
  • You need SSO/RBAC without paying Pro, Teams add-on, or Enterprise.
  • You expect overage on the free Hobby tier.

Buy-check

  • ·Price — freemium, self-host OSS free (MIT); Cloud Hobby $0 (50k units/mo, 2 users); Core $29/mo; Pro $199/mo; Enterprise from $2,499/mo; overage from $8/100k units as of 2026-08-19. Open the pricing page, not a screenshot.
  • ·Free tier — Free tier exists — burn it first.
  • ·Cancel fallout — What happens to your data/projects on cancel — check the ToS, not the FAQ.
  • ·Seat math — Per-seat pricing multiplies quietly. Count seats before the annual plan.
  • ·Who skips it — Also skipped when: Verbose agents would blow through the per-unit meter quickly.; You need SSO/RBAC without paying Pro, Teams add-on, or Enterprise..
