Open-source agent with a zero-markup gateway is the pitch, and the public price page actually separates platform / inference / cloud compute. Solo with BYOK or local models is free; Teams and Pass are optional. Auto-routing and a 5% credit fee still need watching. Not a Ship without a repo run.

Field guide: Kilo Code →

Strengths

  • Open-source agent with a zero-markup gateway at provider rates.
  • Public pricing separates platform, inference and cloud compute meters.
  • Solo use with BYOK or local models is free.

Known limitations

  • Three meters (platform, inference, cloud compute) make a real bill three line items.
  • Credit top-ups carry a 5% processing fee on the published card.
  • Cloud agents bill per second on top of tokens; idle VMs are not free.
  • "Free models" via Auto Free depend on whatever the gateway currently offers.

Use it when

  • Solo developers who want a free coding agent with their own API keys.
  • Teams that prefer an open, self-hostable agent over a black-box editor.

Skip it when

  • Three separate meters make your bill unpredictable.
  • A 5% credit top-up fee and Auto-routing uncertainty bother you.
  • You are not willing to run and verify the open-source repo yourself.

Buy-check

  • ·Price — freemium, individual platform $0; Teams $15/user/mo; Kilo Pass from $19/mo; Gateway at provider rates + 5% credit-purchase fee; cloud compute from $0.33–$1.20/h as of 2026-08-24. Open the pricing page, not a screenshot.
  • ·Free tier — Free tier exists — burn it first.
  • ·Cancel fallout — What happens to your data/projects on cancel — check the ToS, not the FAQ.
  • ·Seat math — Per-seat pricing multiplies quietly. Count seats before the annual plan.
  • ·Who skips it — Also skipped when: Three separate meters make your bill unpredictable.; A 5% credit top-up fee and Auto-routing uncertainty bother you..
