Open-source, extensible local agent from Block/AAIF — recipes, MCP, BYOK, beyond autocomplete.

ledger entry · observed by @whysanesanders

A local agent you can actually read: recipes, extensions, MCP, runs on your machine against whatever provider you wire. Quality is the model, not a hosted IDE. Docs URLs have moved with the AAIF donation, so start from the GitHub repo. Not field-run in this pass.

Field guide: Goose →

Strengths

  • Open-source local agent with recipes, extensions, and MCP support.
  • Runs on your machine against whichever provider you wire.

Known limitations

  • No bundled inference; a frontier model bill is still a frontier model bill.
  • Desktop/docs hosting moved off some Block GitHub Pages paths (404s happen).
  • You own secrets, tool allowlists, and what the agent can execute locally.
  • Smaller packaged UX than Cursor/Claude Code; more assembly required.

Use it when

  • Developers who want a transparent, self-hosted agent and do not mind assembly.
  • Teams that need BYOK control over models and secrets.

Skip it when

  • You want a polished, bundled IDE experience like Cursor or Claude Code.
  • You expect vendor-hosted inference rather than paying your own model bill.
  • You cannot manage local secrets, tool allowlists, and execution risk.

Buy-check

  • ·Price — free, CLI/desktop free (Apache); you pay the model provider; no Goose seat fee as of 2026-08-24. Open the pricing page, not a screenshot.
  • ·Free tier — Free tier exists — burn it first.
  • ·Cancel fallout — What happens to your data/projects on cancel — check the ToS, not the FAQ.
  • ·Seat math — Per-seat pricing multiplies quietly. Count seats before the annual plan.
  • ·Who skips it — Also skipped when: You want a polished, bundled IDE experience like Cursor or Claude Code.; You expect vendor-hosted inference rather than paying your own model bill..
